With sustainability a key consideration in its operations, Australian mining and exploration company Sandfire Resources engaged Churchill to review its Environmental Social Governance (ESG) strategy, to strengthen its sustainability and business performance.

With its increasingly diversified mining operations across three continents, improving and increasing sustainability is a key business objective and mission for Sandfire Resources.

They had been working to increase internal sustainability awareness and discipline in their operations over a number of years.

Keen to move to the next level of maturity, in 2020 Sandfire engaged Churchill to independently review its ESG strategy, and assist the organisation to develop its Annual Sustainability report.

What we did

Using a structured, rigorous approach, Churchill helped Sandfire refresh its ESG Strategy.

The approach involved engagement with Executives and key stakeholders within the organisation over three key phases.

The first phase was dedicated to generating alignment on the ESG value proposition and seeking alignment on strategic priorities across the organisation. Long term targets and goals were also established.

The second phase supported Sandfire to establish the pathway to achieve their strategic priorities, with short and medium-term targets identified. This was to enable the organisation to embark on the journey in a controlled and measured manner.

In the third phase, Churchill provided support in seeking endorsement from the Executives as well as in the broader communication of the strategy (including developing the content for the annual sustainability report).

The outcome

Sandfire now has a comprehensive ESG strategy that is aligned to the overall corporate strategy, has defined activities, and includes rigour around measurement and communication. This includes:

• Clearly defined Sandfire’s ESG value proposition
• Six key priority ESG areas of importance identified for activities
• Long, medium, and short term objectives and targets for each priority area.
• Clear strategic pathway (including initiatives under each priority) to enable Sandfire to achieve its Sustainability vision and targets.
• Framework for the Annual Sustainability Report including relevant disclosures.
